A Dad + a 4-year-old
It started with songs around the house.
My four-year-old daughter loves drawing, music, toys, making up characters and turning almost anything into a song.
We have always been a musical house, listening to music, morning noon and night. So naturally with a 4-year-old, our house began to fill with half-invented lyrics, unusual character names and stories that make perfect sense to her.
Recently we realised AI could help us take those little ideas further.
Instead of a song disappearing after breakfast, we could actually make it, listen to it and take it with us.
She could hear a character she invented become a song.
She could see something that began as a drawing or idea become a little creative world.
That's how Playroom Pop started.
The goal isn't to let AI do the imagining. It's to show her what becomes possible when her imagination has the tools to make her wonderings real.
The important distinction is: AI isn't doing the imagining.
Her imagination supplies the characters, ideas, funny words, drawings and direction.
Dad helps shape those ideas and uses creative tools to help make them real.
Why AI?
AI is likely to be part of the world our children grow up in. I want her to understand how to use it, but I care far more about making sure she never mistakes the tool for the creative part.
The valuable thing is still having an idea, choosing what you like, changing what you don't, imagining something new and deciding what you want to make.
If technology makes the canvas bigger, that's brilliant in my view.
But she still gets to hold the crayon.
